The 3" x 5" index cards, arranged alphabetically by surname, list each soldier's name, assigned unit(s), dates assigned to and discharged from the unit(s) and reasons for discharge. Notes appearing in the bottom left corner of the cards indicate draft classification, rank and changes in rank. Birth dates and social security numbers are restricted.

Michigan's military establishment formally began with an August 30, 1805 act that provided for a territorial militia. A state militia was established in 1838.
